SDSW is committed to growing our community of filmmakers, telling our stories, dreams, funny tales, animations and more.

The SDSW Committee deliver learning disability led filmmaking workshops across regional South Australia.

Since 2014 we have presented SDSW Workshops in Whyalla, Ceduna, Claire and the Barossa.

What happens in a SDSW Workshop?

Dream it.

The SDSW Committee are made up of filmmakers with learning disability, who present our workshops. We believe in empowering ourselves to create authentically.

Starting with an overview of film making, and what is possible, our Committee Presenters will screen some examples from the world of learning disability filmmaking. This makes for inspiring viewing that starts us dreaming it!

Build it.

Once we have seen what is possible we get to work on making a film. We start by breaking down the elements of filmmaking from storyboarding, to acting, camera work, green screen, lighting, soundtrack creation and editing.

Getting stuck straight in, the workshop participants are paired with SDSW Committee members who mentor and guide participants through each process.

Participants are welcome to join in to all parts of the process they are attracted to. For instance, good at drawing - work on the storyboard, or like making sound - work on the soundtrack, like everything about filmmaking - jump in.

Grow it.

The SDSW is excited to be actively growing the world of learning disability filmmakers. Past participants have gone on to make their own films, enter international film festivals, and to win international filmmaking awards.

Following participation in the workshops and making a film, our workshop graduates have the opportunity to join the SDSW Committee, and themselves become leaders to keep sharing.

Growing our committee strengthens our ability to deliver more disability led outreach workshops, programs and events. This in turn generates content which will builds understanding of learning disability and showcases disability leadership in the mainstream.

Let’s grow it together!
